Detailed Description

Background

Autonomous road vehicles (AVs) are self-driving vehicles that can move independently without a driver on board. They can operate under different weather conditions and respond to incidents. They combine a comprehensive system of sophisticated sensors and software to perceive the environment and drive while avoiding obstacles. 

AVs can come in different sizes, from 40-seater driverless buses to smaller 14-seater driverless shuttles to driverless cars. Singapore is planning AV trials in the early 2020s in three neighbourhoods, namely Punggol, Tengah and Jurong Innovation District. Autonomous buses are also being tested extensively to provide safe and comfortable rides for the public.

Objectives

The objective of the Study on the Perceptions and Acceptance of Autonomous Vehicles in Singapore is to better understand and grow public acceptance of AVs in Singapore for public transport.

This will be done through understanding views, perceptions, and attitudes across a diverse profile of the Singaporean public, and through co-creation of solutions to improve public acceptance.

Recommendations of communications and engagement policies (including policy, implementation and operational considerations) will be produced based on the study’s findings, to foster acceptance of AVs in public transport.
