SAF Aid for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) airlifted the first batch of humanitarian supplies, donated by the Government and Mercy Relief, to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh yesterday (10 Oct).

A Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) KC-135R transport aircraft delivered the aid package to Chittagong Airport. The relief package consisted of blankets, food and medical supplies. With a second batch of supplies scheduled for delivery today (11 Oct), the total worth of Singapore aid to the Rohingya refugees is around $270,000.

Senior Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman witnessed the handing over of relief supplies to Chittagong Divisionlal Commissioner Md Abdul Mannan by Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Lim Lit Lam from the SAF’s Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre.

“Singapore offers our deepest condolences to all those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine state,” said Dr Maliki.

Dr Maliki added that the items in the relief package were based on feedback from the Bangladeshi government on the refuee needs.

The SAF has been working closely with Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mercy Relief and the Bangladeshi government to coordinate the aid supplies delivery to meet the refugees’ needs.

“Singaporeans are also equally concerned with what they see is happening,” said Dr Maliki as many community groups have raised funds and worked closely with relief agencies to distribute them.

For instance, Mercy Relief will distributed dignity kits, containing scarves, sanitary napkins and soap, to women as the organisation identified them as the most vulnerable group in the overcrowded refugee camps.

The Government had previously pledge about $300,000 worth of humanitarian relief supplies to Bangladesh and Myanmar for the affected communities.
