Messi to Lead Argentina in Friendly with Lions

It is confirmed: Two-time World Cup champions Argentina led by star captain Lionel Messi will play an international friendly against the Singapore Lions on 13 June at the National Stadium.

This will be Singapore’s first-ever meeting with Argentina.

The fixture is by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and international sport and entertainment promoter UNICESS to mark FAS’ 125th anniversary.

Organisers said yesterday (19 Apr) that the match is part of Argentina’s tour to Australia, and will take place after they face arch-rival Brazil in Melbourne on 9 June.

Argentina will be bringing its full ‘A’ squad to Australia, which means star players like Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel di Maria, and Messi will be playing in Singapore.

Organisers described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans in the region to catch Argentina in action. It will also cap an exciting soccer week for Singapore sports fans.

TODAY understands that the Lions are scheduled to take on ASEAN rivals Myanmar in a friendly on 6 June, followed by its Asian Cup Group E qualifying game against Taiwan on 10 June.

National football head coach V. Sundramoorthy said of the Argentina game: “We hope that Singaporeans will come out in force to cheer us on.

There had been fears that the National Stadium pitch may not be up to the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) expectations, but the AFA has given the green light.

Tickets, from S$40 to S$188 for adults, are available from Sports Hub Tix. Concessions for children and senior citizens are also available.
