PM Lee: Singaporeans Assured Of Good Governance

Singaporeans are assured of another decade of predictability, political stability and good governance after the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) strong showing in the 2015 General Elections, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He was speaking at the party’s first convention since GE 2015 yesterday (6 Dec).

Mr Lee, PAP’s secretary-general, said that the 69.9 per cent of the vote enabled him to strengthen the team in the Cabinet, renew the ranks of MPs in Parliament and prepare to hand over to his successor and the next generation of leaders after the next general election, due by 2021.

He put the strong showing down to three factors: The hard work of the party’s Members of Parliament and their teams; the PAP Government’s policy agenda; and the stronger sense of national identity this year.

The result also enables Singapore to complete a “crucial transition” from the generations who went through independence to a post-independence generation of Singaporeans and leaders.

PM Lee also elaborated on three measures that have been possible by the “solid victory”. Firstly, Singapore is able to carry out a smooth leadership transition, transform its economy and society, and lastly, deal with external challenges united as one.

If society is divided, politics will be divisive, Mr Lee said. But if society is cohesive, constructive politics has a chance to work, and the PAP can continue working for the interest of all Singaporeans, he added.
