Most Want Founders' Memorial at Bay East Garden

The Founders' Memorial – in honour of Singapore's founding leaders – could be sited at Bay East Garden.

Located at Gardens by the Bay, it emerged as the venue of choice among 72 per cent of more than 700 people surveyed by the Founders' Memorial Committee (FMC).

FMC said Bay East Garden presents "a forward-looking narrative with an inspiring view of the city skyline that was built over the years".

The other option was Fort Canning Park, preferred by some for its connection with Singapore's pre-independence history, received 21 per cent of votes. The remaining 7 per cent had no preference, or suggested elsewhere.

However, Bay East Garden has more space and potential for future development. Fort Canning Park is also steep and might be less accessible to the old, noted FMC.

The second phase of engagement, completed this month, also had participants focus on the desired visitor experience, physical features, and programmes for the memorial.

On the wish list are indoor and outdoor spaces, lush greenery, use of holograms and audioscapes, guided tours and exhibitions, and allowing visitors to contribute messages and reflections. Participants envisioned the memorial as "a timeless icon, evoking national pride and fostering a sense of unity" among Singaporeans.

The wider public can share their views in the third engagement phase at a Gardens by the Bay showcase from 14 March to end-April. A roving version will visit the heartlands from April to May. More details will be released later.

Funding the memorial and the timeline for its construction have yet to be determined. FMC is set to present its findings to the Government by the middle of the year.
