Singapore Named UNESCO Creative City of Design

Singapore has been designated a Unesco creative City of Design, the DesignSingapore Council announced on Friday (11 Dec).

This makes Singapore one of the two cities in South-east Asia to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Bandung in Indonesia, Budapest (Hungary), Detroit (United States), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Puebla (Mexico) will also join 16 existing members in the design network.

"The designation will spur us on in building a pervasive design and innovative culture that involves everyone - designers, communities and the public," Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information said a statement by the Council.

Being a Unesco creative city will also create more opportunities for collaborations between the Singapore design industry and other member cities, said the Council.

The council will also be hosting the annual UCCN Conference within the next four years, it said.
