Power Trip Caused Morning Disruption on NEL

A power trip caused train services on SBS Transit's North-East Line (NEL) to be disrupted for more than half an hour during the morning peak period yesterday (13 Oct).

Train services between Hougang and Farrer Park stations were stalled, and five stations — Buangkok, Hougang, Kovan, Serangoon and Woodleigh — experienced power blackouts, said SBS Transit. Nonetheless, emergency lights were activated in all five stations.

SBS Transit said it managed to restore power progressively from 8.02am, and that trains started moving from 8.11am. Full service resumed at about 8.20am. However, it was not until 9.30am that service frequencies were back to normal.

“During this period, free bus rides as well as shuttle buses were available between the affected stations,” said Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit’s senior vice-president for corporate communications. “We apologise to all passengers for the distress and inconvenience caused. We are investigating the cause of the fault.”

This incident came a month after another glitch brought the system down for more than two hours during the morning rush hour, making it the fifth major disruption for the 12-year-old line this year.

Separately, Transport Minister Khaw has asked Land Transport Authority (LTA) to conduct a joint exercise with rail operators SMRT and SBS Transit to test the enhanced contingency plans for train breakdowns.
