Update as at 3 January 2012

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan said that plans to put in place alternatives to Stamford Canal, or even retention point upstream in order to reduce the loading on that section of the canal, must be ‘accelerated'. The  recent flood at Orchard Road shows that the Stamford canal does not have sufficient 'reserve capacity' to deal with more intense rainfall and further variability in the weather. His comments were made at the sidelines of a community event over the weekend.

Minister Vivian Balakrishnan added that this is not something which can be solved overnight, as these are very expensive and extensive projects that have to be approached methodically and carefully. However, he made a commitment to make things better and will give a full update in Parliament next week.
