It’s taken six days for the Olympics to come alive for Singapore and I almost wished it hadn’t.

Because instead of uniting a nation as sports often does, Feng Tianwei’s bronze medal win has done the exact opposite.

Singapore’s first individual medal in 52 years has divided the nation and re-ignited the vicious, ugly debate surrounding imported foreign talent. In fact, it’s brought it into ever-sharper focus.

The most replied comment to her win on Yahoo! is “No matter how successful in whatever Games Singapore has won is useless. I am sorry to say this. It is not won by a true Singaporeans. No ill feelings to the participants. It is just that you are not a true Singaporean.”

Among the over 200 comments on Yahoo! Singapore’s Facebook wall immediately after her win on Wednesday night, Elle Toh writes, “Honestly, I cannot bring myself to feel proud for a foreigner to win a medal for us, although they carry our Singapore flag. But I thank Feng Tianwei nonetheless for putting our name on the chart. “

Personally, am I proud of her win? Yes.

Would I feel prouder if it was won by a “true-blue” Singaporean? Most definitely.

If Feng’s magnificent win has triggered an outpouring of national pride among some, imagine what a Schooling, a Jasmine Ser, a Heem Wei can do should they mount the podium. It's exactly why names like Fandi Ahmad and Sundram are still revered in Singapore.

On the one hand, I feel bad for Feng because as an athlete who has trained and shed sweat and tears for Singapore for the last five years, it must be so disheartening for the Harbin-born China native to have her sterling achievement tainted by such debate.

Imagine how the 25-year-old must feel reading and hearing the reaction surrounding her win.

FURORE

As a sports fan, I also applaud her grit, determination and skill as an athlete at the peak of her game – her inspiring battle in the semi-finals against world No. 1 Ding Ning demonstrate perfectly the Olympic values of Faster, Higher, Stronger.

But on the other, the voices on the ground can no longer be ignored and dismissed as “noise”.

For sure, the debate is not new – the same furore surrounded the women’s table-tennis team’s silver in 2008 and even long before – but now it has only intensified.

From what I gather, the on-ground sentiment is that Feng has not been “naturalised” enough. For all the talk about Singapore’s forefathers themselves being foreign-born, Singaporeans want to see one of their own succeed. Much debate surrounds what “one of our own” means.

'TRUE-BLUE SINGAPOREAN'

Let me attempt to define it: A "true-blue" Singaporean is someone who may not necessarily have been born here, but he or she must definitely have been raised, schooled and lived in Singapore.

Having served National Service is a big plus for the males, while being able to appreciate and speak the local lingo and enjoy our local food, traditions and culture are also a given. In short, this person’s ROOTS, family included, must be here, come what may when the chips are down and no matter where he or she is in the world.

Of course, the cash incentives for winning medals in Singapore cannot and should not be separated from the issue.

Feng’s bronze medal win is worth S$250,000 under the Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme.

Minus the 20 per cent she’s expected to return to the table-tennis association, she will pocket a cool S$200,000 – enough for a downpayment for a Singapore condo  – or some say, a luxury mansion back home in Harbin.

Why not remove the MAP incentive? Then let’s see how many still want to represent, sweat and bleed for Singapore.

By all means, reward athletes for important victories AFTER they win, but don’t hold up a billboard advertising our little red dot accepts sports mercenaries for hire.

QUESTIONS REMAIN

The questions, whether out loud or in thoughts, being asked now in coffeeshops and homes across Singapore now is:
1) Will Feng stay in Singapore for good?
2) Did she come here for the money?

And people’s concerns are justified; there have been painful, bitter lessons in recent Singapore sports history.

Footballer Egmar Goncalves, table-tennis' Zhang Xueling, shot putter Dong Enxin and badminton’s Xiao Luxi are just some who were given the red Singapore passport only to ditch it when they made their riches and conveniently no longer had the need for one.

Along the way, years of hard work, training and tax-payer money down the drain.

Not only that, the debate surrounding Feng’s victory is a microcosm of what, some say, ails Singapore.
Success at all costs, short-term quick fixes and a money-can-solve-everything approach.

There is a ray of hope however – the younger ones in Singapore seem much more accepting of her win.  And her win does pave the way for even more to believe that a world champion can be trained and groomed to win at the highest level in this tiny nation.

But the discontent and unhappiness must be addressed. For too many, Feng’s medal win means nothing.

And if the goal of sports is nation-building and to unite Singaporeans as one, her victory, and others like hers in future, has done anything but.

I fully support the thread as the medal is not won by a tru blue Singaporen.
It was "Bought" with Singaporeans' mnies and we pay a stu pid foreigner to go win it.

End of the day, she will go back to her home in China, she will not stay in Singapore for good, I can promise you.

Singaporeans are not made out to be sportmens and so be it.
Why should we stress so much importance to go and win a stu pid bornze medal when Singaporeans are not happy at all.

We should send all these foreign sprotmens homw right now and spend the moneis on true born and bred Singaporeans who will stick to our homes.

true born and bred Singaporeans

Are you sure? Our grandparents/parents were born in Singapore state of Malaysia less than 5 decades ago; where did the claim in true blue Singaporeans come from when our roots were Malaysians?

When residents become naturalized citizens, where did we adopt the discourteous perspective as host not to welcome them?

I am a true blue Singaporean and my grandfather speaks both Hokkien and Malay language. I DUN CARE IF THEY COME  FROM MALAYSIA OR CHINA!

Anyway, Feng's hard work really paid -off. You saw her sweat dropping as she smacks the ball? Worse, she had to play continuous 2 matches. This is literally impossible for most people.

In all, Thank You Feng and Congrats!

Singaporeans are very good to discredit any PRC as "questionable".

It really doesn't end.

Yes she (they) are fighting hard for us and are wearing our Singapore colours.

Imagine she (they) was also fighting hard for us against their home country China in the matches!

Worse.

We Singaporeans are so good to brand them as not home true blue and what crap labels!

Singaporeans are really dumb!

Win a medal also complain, dont win a medal lagi complain.

There is no end to dumb Singaporeans.

We dont throw our support on them, but throw brickbats at them playing for our Country Singapore!?

Dumb Singaporeans always put money first and think everything is only for money.

People win $200,000 also get jealous.

But never question how much blood-sweat-tears-sacrifice she put in!?

If we give $200,000 to any Singaporean he cant even qualify for SEA Games!

$ingaporeans will forever be dumb!?

Just how many mountain turtles are there in Singapore, is the question we should ask!

haha . .true.

The ***** government would sink in money for SuZhou investment and lost our CPF in it. They invested in  3.5 million foreigners and yet cannot produce good results. It is just that PAP cannot invest correctly to get the best result. Sounds like Temesek Holdings?  Haiz.

But I am happy thatat least 1 foreigner won a medal for Singapore, though not proud of it. This accolade should be give to China who gave her life and childhood education.

Yes, he will not!

It is sheer jealousy-- you are correct.

Reading the other comments, we realize how many green monsters exist.

On our island on forums, a peculiar event occurs.

Notice that as soon as money is mentioned, the envious monsters with negative  reactions spreading their chronic dissatisfactions appear.

Yes, you are right, you give Singaporean $ 200,000 he cannot win medals in Olympics but he will donate it to Charity.

For PRC chinese, you do not have to give him, he will go and steal and con the $ 200,000

Hahahahaha.......

You are very wrong!!! It shows that you did not integrate with Singaporeans and do not bother to learn Singapore history.

Mr Tan Howe Liang won the Silver individual Olympics medal for Singapore and he did not receive any monetary rewards for his effort.

The foreign talents with so much money handed out to them can only manage a Bronze individual Olympics medal. If Olympics committee allows China to field 2 teams for group event, Singapore will not even get Silver in the Beijing Olympics.

Singapore spent Million$ if not Billion$ subsidising our Education system for Singaporeans.

We have not produced any single Noble Prize Winners but produced Sinagporean dumbos asking whether the money spent on winning a Table Tennis Bronze was wasted!?

WOW!

China only has 2 Nobel Prize Winners, and all are for PEACE:

Liu Xiaobo (born 28 December 1955) is a Chinese literary critic, writer, professor, and human rights activist who called for political reforms and the end of communist single-party rule in China. He is currently incarcerated as a political prisoner in China.

14th Dalai Lama (born 6 July 1935) who is currently in exile due to persecution by China.

At the least Singaporeans do not need to massacre Singaporeans to garner Nobel Peace Prize as trophies.

You are feeding from SIngaporean handouts, and if you are so smart, then why your country discarded you so much so that you have no choice but to scavenge for food here underneath Singaporeans?

Shame on you and your PRC education system. You do not even know your own country history.

Did you know that shameful of not getting any decent Nobel Prize went on to create a Confucius Prize to award to themeselves?

"Singaporean are losers cant stand winner. Because their own country cannot produce champion and are always complaining."

The above excuse from our govt ,MPs ,PRC,.........................Nationalities less Singapore citizens.
I  think she will continue to stay and win for money for herself and medals for Singapore.
Singapore Govt can then say see see my country got medal ah when going to other country.

National day is coming,I guess our dear PM is going to say and commend her again.

"People of singapore you do not have any sport talent, that why PRC are here for you. Put your head down, shut up and work until death."

For Feng, she will have enough to retire in China as a billionare with Singapore generous donation.

How "botok" singaporean spend their money giving to FT.

She did what she was hired to do, but that's about it. After winning her medal she can now move back to China.

But a lot of Singaporeans aren't proud of her and I understand that. The medal just feels bought. It would not be the same if a true blue Singaporean won it.

Also, the mnoney spent on $ could be better spent on sports infrastructure. Even tried to go to a public pool on weekends? You can probably swim a few centimeters before hitting someone, with endless lessons being conducted. Toilets are like crap. Bicycle lanes? Don't make me laugh. Running tracks also lacking. The money spent on all these FT sportsmen would be better spent on improving current sports facilities or making new ones, to create a real sporting culture.

Of course, it was worse with YOG when Vivian B managed to spend more than $700 million in two weeks for nothing.

And ST, no one is SUFFERING if we don't win olympic medals. There are more people SUFFERING as a result of bad govt policies. Open your eyes.

Go jump in the swill public swimming pool.

Friends, bottom line, the people who made the policy and decision on how to spend public $$$ need to be responsible and answer for the outcome of all the sporting initiatives.

If after all these outcries, the top people still could not hear, see, feel, explain or correct what is wrong, then it is the citizens who at the end of the day EITHER shut-up and follow along quitely OR make your voice heard behind that tiny piece of paper the next time you are given a chance to do so.

It is YOUR CHOICE, no need to quarrel here.

Giving incentives as encoragement is good but the payout is over priced.

Every sportsmen and women should be rewarded whether they win or lose as it is a sport spirits.

Why  not reward nsmen more as they not only defence the nation, sometime they are also risking their lives?

What will happen a country if they do not win olympics medals?
What will happen to a country if we do not invest in defence?

The gov should use tax payer money wisely in areas like housing, transport, employment issues and helping the needy group.

FTW is granted citizenship in 2008 as reported in  newspaper, what contribution have she done for SGP?
We can also field our local athelete in the olympics. Are we buying the medals?

NSmen are defending the nation 24by7, if without national denfence, will she settled here and sleep well at night?

Table tennis team should not comprise of all china national.

We should include at least one local in the team, we will feel proud even if we lose.

PM and minister urge Singaporean to accept them and say new citizen should actively involve in community work or grassroot activities.

So far has FTW, Lee and Wang do any of these?

What is the criteria for granting them citizenship?
