The present government is made -up of the 3rd generation of Ministers and Stat Boards. What NEW initiatives have they executed to show proud results to earn our respect?

Well, respect is earned and not endowed upon.

So far, the respect of the government earned in the 60s and 70s has been nearly destroyed by themselves. They cannot blame anyone.

Just look at the policies and "advice" they have given of late. What is the percentage of the population that has listened and abided to it??

Heh, we are learning fast! But please don't do it to our children. They won't learn anything from us if we keep parroting this.

Be careful of your words, you maybe landed in court, its something like threatening! If a person understand - negative feedbacks are an excellent sources of improvement for their shortcomings! Everyone makes mistakes, don't we (even words or phrases we used)? We are not Saints, Buddhas, Allah, agree?

The best is to forgive and forget!

A good teaching for human - "Nobody is Perfect in anyway" and there is absolutely no "perfection" throughout one's life.

Cowards (as in the Pre-U Episode) usually dont reserve respect for others and for our Office holders, until they have to delete their blogs and apologise.

Not really. At that point of time. More than 500 people. Yet no one speak for DPM.

Now you use your GUNS and point. SENT LAWYER VERBAL SPEAK TO HIM ( PARTLY THREAT ) without RECORDS ASK FOR APOLOGISE.

That is not cowards. That is call "Know DEATH and let you WIN". WE fight another day.

But Justice speak already. NO ONE STAND-UP for him. HE IS ALONE and only PAID workers standing behind him. Money gone. support gone.

COWARDS are 17 year olds, who think the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore has to show them respect first, then it is considered the Deputy Prime Minister "earned" their respect!?

Pui !

Don't mean you WIN the election. you get the respect.

Parents and govt is totally different things. One is link by BLOOD. The other is link by election VOTE.

YOU CALL LHL " FATHER" is it ? Then change you name too as well right ?

Some forummers here really have mental issue. Own father mother also betray still talk "RESPECT" ?

No matter what, they are WORTHY of RESPECT.

We may not agree with their handling, we may question them, we may "hit" back at them for their wrong decisions.

But they represent the OFFICE, and no matter what that deserves RESPECT.

It's like with our parents, we can challenge them, we can question them, we can even quarrel with them, but we should never never lose the respect that they are entitled as our PARENTS.

Unfortunately, many Singaporeans and REACH-tizens, cannot differentiate the difference.

You mean respect is an entitlement? Then why accuse Singaporeans of having a sense of "entitlement"?

Have you been in the Army?

I bet you said "Yes, corporal" or "Yes, Sir" a thousand times!?

oooooooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo

In the army?  You said "Yes, corporal" or "Yes, Sir" a thousand times!?
Out of fear, that is not out of respect. Try saying no and get throw into detention barrack.
Will you dare to say no?
In the army they can't take no for an answer, since instruction must be followed through without question.
Can the army fight and win a war, if the commander instructed the men to charge and they say, NO, or start to argue till the cows come home? So those  "Yes, corporal" or "Yes, Sir" are just following orders and has got nothing to do with respect.
Honestly, if you ever been in the army, you will hear the soldier cursing and swearing behind the corporals & officers, so much for the respect.

You wrote a long story.

In the Army, you HAD to respect the RANK, whether you like it or not. That's the point.

The person holding the Corporal rank did nothing to earn your respect, but you had to RESPECT the (his) RANK.

It is the same with the OFFICE, it does not matter who is in OFFICE, you had to respect the OFFICE (the Minister).

In this society and in the ARMY, there MUST be PROTOCOL and RESPECT.

Given all these replies to you, isn't it clear that I don't need to answer your question? Remember, don't underestimate others. You may find yourself surrounded by those who disagree with you. But do you see us disrepecting you? Hope that you can find some enlightenment here. Thanks.

Was that you "Fat MaMa"? (You did not sign off, departing from your usual).

I do not underestimate others either.

And I already find myself surrounded by people who disagree with me. And that's fine. But afterall, I am here to change their (your) mind, if I can to put forth sensible discussions and arguments.

And in this case, or most cases, there is continued exchange and disagreement to the "Respect" for Government.

And you know what, I still think many do not or cannot differentiate the difference.

And I will continue to argue the course, that the Government (the Office) deserve our Respect. They do NOT have to EARN it.

There are other points I made why I think so to support my argument, like in National Day, below comment.

And I expound further.

The Announcer does not say "Those who Respect the PM (The President).......Please stand. Those who do not respect the PM can sit?!"

Get it?!

It is the OFFICE we are standing up for. It is the NATION we are standing up for. Those (the person) who hold that office is deserving RESPECT merely because he is representing the OFFICE.

Thanks for reminding me. I have forgotten to sign off.

Regarding your last sentence on respect I see your point of contention. Without having to deal with the meaning and philosophy of respect, there is a difference between your perception of the word and those who disagreed with you. Your "respect" is what others call "blind obedience". It is the recognition of those in authority by virtue of their position. These days, repect is respect - an admiration of what someone has done. So it is very much about the person occupying the position, rather than the positon.

I am glad that you have a mission trying to change others through meaningful discussions. But to do so, you must be opened to changes too. It has to be a two-way process because no one person is right all the time or wrong all the time. If we can exchange our thoughts meaningfully here, we will all learn and change for the better. In fact, since I started blogging here I have learnt a lot from all of you and I thank God for it. Regardless of views or convictions, it has been a pleasure to read and engage fellow Singaporeans here. Thanks again.

Thanks Fat MaMa, for taking the trouble to read and understand my views.

I think basically everyone wants and needs to be understood.

Well perhaps together we can work better to improve all our lots in here.

Though we may not agree with each other all the time, we owe it to ourselves to get "there".

I know you may not be able to "see" me, as I "see" you, but you should be able to spot me out here and there, though I wish to remain "Guest", while you have penned "Fat MaMa".

And I will always be the "Defender of the TRUTH". (no...that wont be my identifier)

Cheers!

WHOA!!... Hold it right there.

1 "No matter what, they are worthy of respect"...??
You're dead WRONG.  One must know the diff betw right and wrong, and do the RIGHT thing.
Anyone who does the right thing is worthy of respect.  RIGHT thing.

2 "They represent the office, and no matter what that deserves respect"...??
You're dead WRONG, AGAIN.  Representing the office but not doing right is WRONG, too.

3 You can't place the govt at the same table as our parents. Our parents are special to us in every way and they give us unconditional love. I don't challenge nor quarrel with my parents and I am proud to state that I have never, ever lost any respect nor love for my parents. They have all my love and respect.

4 "Unfortunately, many Singaporeans and REACH-tizens, cannot differentiate the difference."
Unfortunately, you cannot even differentiate RIGHT from WRONG. You can't just simply make a sweeping statement like that. It's WRONG.

Fortunately for me, I can tell the difference betw RIGHT from WRONG. I hope you can one day.

Yes, your holier-than-thou attitude is a GREAT way of showing you know what is respect and that you practice what you preach.

Respect is earned. There is a difference between compliance and respect. You can comply to a person have respect for him and you can comply to a person and don't give a crap about him.

Saying yes sir, no sir doesn't give a person respect. You're just being compliant. Or in the OP's (original Poster) case, a sheep.   Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.

A National OFFICE (holder), dont have to earn your respect.

You have to "respect" it anyhow.

Do you trample on the Nation's flag? (Well, it's only a fabric or a piece of cloth you might say?!)

Cowards (as in the Pre-U Episode) usually dont reserve respect for others and for our Office holders, until they have to delete their blogs and apologise.

(Nursery rhymes. I hope you are not reading them for self erudition)

I'm sorry, but respect goes 2 ways. Takes 2 hands to clap.

I respect the flag because its a representation of my country where I'm born in. That's the difference.
A man in a office? He's just a man in a suit. People put him into power, people can take him out of the power. You want our respect? Show us why the people deem you're worth being put into power.
Nursery Rhymes? I like nursery rhymes. Doesn't anyone? I tell them to my little boy.

Your views.

As you said, 2 hands to clap. Yours and the Ministers. They have to "earn" it from you?!

When your child, shows you dis-respect, will you be inflamed? (He may feel as you, you have to "earn" it as well?)

Yours and your child. (as opposed to yours and the Minister's)

Remember, A minister is a public servant. Our taxes make up their pay. So yes they need to earn our respect.

Scenario.

You are attending the National Day Parade this year 2012.

The PM (or the President) arrives into the stadium.

The Public MC or announcer says : "Please stand for the arrival of PM......President"

YOU who think they dont deserve YOUR "respect" (as they have yet to earn it) continue to sit?!

As I said, many COWARDS (and DUMBOS) in here, dont you think!?
