The new Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) will focus on helping Singaporeans to get marry and start a family earlier. This was highlighted by Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing as a key priority for the new ministry. From Nov 1, the current Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports will be renamed as Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), with Mr Chan continuing as the Acting minister when it is formed on November 1.
Mr Chan explained that as there is an increasing number of younger people who are either marrying later or not marrying at all, there is a need to look at family policies and issues “seriously”. Mr Chan added that family will continue to be the base unit of our society and the MSF will work closely with other agencies to examine family issues.
Besides promoting early family formation, the new ministry will also look at strengthening the social support for Singaporeans, including building a stronger social safety net. He also stressed that "It doesn't mean that just because you have a new ministry, the existing policies are no longer valid".
