The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will impose the maximum fine of S$2 million on transport operator SMRT for the two train disruptions along the North-South Line on December 15 and 17 last year.

This S$2 million will be donated to the Public Transport Fund to help needy families with transport fares.

This is good news, better than let LTA pocket all the money
They have a part to play for failing to protect commuters' interest yet no fine, no penalty, such good deal.
Will SMRT try to recover the costs by increasing fare price?

The Ministry of Transport must also fine LTA another $2mil for neglecting its job.

In total, the $4mil must also be given back to ALL the COMMUTERS as rebates till it has been all used up.

How? All fares will be adjusted for 5% discount immediately, just like they increased fares overnight, no dilly dally.

This is the only FAIR way for the commuters.

LTA is not a body for MAKING $$$$ so the fine must be redistributed back to the community, and that for all bodies as well.

$2m fines? If it is not the public paying for it, which sky is blessing them? Wait... let me leave my largest bins/pails in the open first. This v.v.v. kiasu auntie believes in the magnanimity of the long-suffering and silently paying majority. Thank you in advance.

NOT AGREE THE GOVT MUST FINED THE FORMER MINISTER 2MIL FIRST THAN COME AFTER FINE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT ANOTHER 2MIL THAN LTA AND SMRT TOTAL 8 MIL SHOULD GIVE REBATE TO COMMUTER.

The fine should be sued to the management of SMRT from their management fees and salaries.

They mis-managed it with a poor maintenance and less rigorous regime to beef up the profit figures to fatten the books with profit figures, and fatten their own remuneration.

Collect it out of their pockets!

when SMRT told the LTA about the problem of the metal claws, LTA merely advised SMRT to "monitor the situation" without any follow-up. Thus, both parties (SMRT & LTA) should be held accountable for MRT failings.

It would only be fair that officers in the LTA and the ministry (no bonus this year and return last year bonus) who are responsible are held accountable for their lapses/irresponsibilities. This way, all parties would take their roles more seriously in preventing a recurrence.... get the message across, don't sleep/laze on your job and wait for big issue to happen, prevention is better than cure!

Commuters had inconveniences but no rebates or compensation given, not fair!!
Singaporeans should  be issued a special mrt card with cash value $10 for rides on mrt.
Fare not allowed to be increased for 5 years cos will indirectly result in commuters paying for the fines.

The most troubling part is that the COI has revealed the weaknesses and the lack of accountability within both LTA and SMRT.  Yet, the minister refused to address them. As long as no one is held accountable for what happened, busiiness is as usual. Then what is this time-consuming and expensive inquiry for? We better start clamouring for them to " be a man and do the right thing". If not, there is absolutely no deterrence and no way of improving the system or it's working. The next major accident is just waiting to happen. Are we going to entertain their admission of mistakes without taking responsibility, and foolishly paying for their foul- up?

When you fire those directly responsible, you are just left with the xxx*xxx at the Top.

Isn't Meritocracy simply beautiful?

Fire all! How can the board and top admin. go unscorched? How can the minister admit guilt and that's all? We are just allowing them to go on being so irresponsible. When the next major accident comes, we can't blame them anymore simply because we condone such behaviours now.

Talk about meritocracy, where is it now? It was used to harvest "leaders" in the earlier generations. Once this was done, it degenerates into elitism. Now we have elites with their ill-bred sense of entitlement to this country protecting their turf. So, meritocracy is just a tool and a guise to form a class of people who are willing to disenable their brains and work mindlessly to perpetuate the PAP's political continuity. Glad that many are able to see this and question our so-called meritocracy.
