Listening every week to some victims of work harassments today, primarily it is not so much about the work, but more and more supervisors, managers and top senior officers today can abuse their power over their junior ranking staff whether they be in healthcare, administration or in sales.  Of course the easiest way out by the higher management level is to conclude any reported hostility as " gross misunderstanding" rather than blame it on a supervisory staff concerned in an systemic shortcomings.  I wrote to a senior manager recently who under the guise of being articulate and accommodating can be caustic and without empathy for his own junior officers. "Work is all the same," he said. "Putting a troubled staff into another department won't solve the problem. The staff should know his/her ranking and all my supervisors are people with good management experience."  I really pity all his junior staff in his organization.  His department manager was just as mean as a regime dictator and mistreat her junior staff with "take it or leave it" attitude which many would love "to keel her" in their minds.  A poor leader does not bother that an establishment will fail, only that it will always be sub-optimized.  In other words, why bother, they are afterall junior employees who need to support themselves.  Many average workers like clerks, cashiers, technicians, support staff wind up working under such bad bosses are left feeling trapped as they could not simply just quit their jobs and not think about how to pay their utility bills and other financial commitments month after month.

Though the government employers set a paradigm of working cohesively through the years - its just simply talk shows and no action in reality. There will be supervisors or managers even if they are well intentioned, who can abuse their power from time to time. They can be mean-spirited and nasty (in silent demeanor) to be bullies who will mistreat his/her own junior staff because they are in no position to argue back.  Those who bullies or intimate chooses their victims' personalities carefully - especially junior staff who are weak, insecure or feel that they don't have the calibre to fight back like a neighborhood cat (whatever their reasons).  Isn't it true sometimes things can be so hard in your job particularly when your supervisor is someone who can normally cede authority as a great pretender?

How can you tell if you're working for a bully rather than a boss who is tough and demanding yet respectful? Sometimes it can be hard to tell when you are stuck in the middle of your mid-career, particularly when the bully is someone to whom you would normally want to tango with even in the midst of talking things over with his/head overseer.  As I have used the term here, a bully in a supervisory level are in a position to retaliate and protect themselves (my clients say "jagar theirown backsides").  His/her higher boss will conclude it all as a "big misunderstanding"or "small matter" while it is dead impossible to change the power by those who hurt, demean or take advantage of junior staff who are powerless even though they can be unionized.  It is evidently proven that for bullying a junior staff to occur both parties have to perceive the disparity of power play and the paucity of alternatives

What resolution works best depends very much on the culture of the workplace. You will have to weigh all the pros and cons.  If your supervisor has his or her name printed "manager" on the door and know the person higher than her, filing a grievous report is as useless as going into war with an inferior weapon against the enemy.  In such a scenario, be prepared to leave.  Your manager or supervisor is unlikely to level with you amicably even in front of his or her own boss. If you and others victims in your department know about the bully, tolerated long enough and if your company or establishment sanctions it, explicitly or implicitly, I be blunt with you that you must make plans to leave even though you were a good worker and awarded for your ardent commitments.  Things in your life is not worth striking back and get all overstressed while your enemy laugh out loud.  Start looking for another job NOW though it is not going to be easy, but isn't it true that remaining in that environment is unlike to change for the better?  I know of my clients who said, "Maybe I'll give another chance, as you know jobs are hard to find and I'll take my risk (again)..." The option is yours.  I appreciate your feedbacks.

Ask our friendly Malay people and remember to tip them or go to Malaysia or Indonesia and get the really scary ones who could even make your pants drop!  Ah.....better still for all the belittlement they have inflicted on junior staff, think of ways to irritate them more, and be ready to resign even if no job yet.  If not possible, announce to everyone in your office that he or she molested you and cry like it's the end of the world!!!

Chew more garlic in the mouth and when they come too close for comfort, open thy glorious mouth that will terrify even the meanest manager-vampire and send him screaming and be ready to a stake and hammer...know what I mean.  Heartless souls in the management must be exposed to the sun.  God reigns over those satanic *****s!

A simple of answer of course is to leave the organisation. If there are enough people leaving the department, the supervisor will soon get into trouble. I have seen it happen a couple of time. It is just a matter of time.

On a bigger picture, I recall that the union(in principle) was invented to fight these ill treatments. Unfortunately we do not see many unionised companies in Singapore. I have heard of one Government employee just casually mentioned some unhappiness to her union leader and her boss was invited to tea. I am not advocating such behaviour but sometimes such "firm" support would be most welcoming.

The best alternative is to depend on yourself. Spend within your means, make yourself mobile, make yourself marketable. It would give you the confidence to do what is right when the time comes.

It seems like no one is spare, and we have all been victims of Vampire bosses.

There's a folklore to ward of Vampires.

People can wear a necklace of cloves of garlic.

It is said Vampires cannot stand them? (I dont know, they hate having bad breath or something?!)

I now a few in hellcare in SGH!!!  That place is really under a curse.  Work there and you see what I mean. They like to work till the sun goes down, man!  No more life in them, just *****ing blood from those who can be *****ed and never ever repent!  That's really what our psychologist and he knows better!  I say we make more noises here and ***** those management who are more or less vampires awaken to cover up for more vampires in their departments.  It is so terrorizing for those who were poked, gashed and feel so tormented until they wanna to resign but still cannot find opportunity.  I wish them luck to find a good job and sabo their managers and exposed their fangs!!  MOH must know who are the vampires in SGH campus.  Never work there for sure.

The govt denys thart they have vampires.  Perhaps hybrids that are even worse because they dress themselves nice in executive clothing and "keel junior staff" to make them feel their power that *****s and *****s till they are full.  Time for the govt to be honest about bad bosses!

If any boss of mine try to touch my sensitivity, I will "keel 'em" till they kneel down and admit their nonsense. No such thing as misunderstanding.  Even there's a law if one abuse an animal here.
