The recent spate of Ferrari accidents at the Rochor Road-Victoria Street Junction caused a stir among contributors on REACH platforms, who urge the authorities to impose extra safety measures at the fateful spot.

Following the accidents, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) conducted checks at the site and found  it to be safe. Checks were carried out at night after the accident occurred and also during the day.

On 29th May, LTA announced that it will ‘synchronise the green phase’ of the pedestrian crossing signals and the Victoria Street signal lights so that both will be green simultaneously. It also explained that it will reinstate overhead traffic signals in the area once construction works for the Downtown Line’s Bugis station are completed next year.

However in response to public feedback that the absence of traffic lights makes the area more accident prone, LTA announced that they will bring forward the installation of the overhead traffic lights to 5th June.

The only trade-off was that installing the overhead lights would result in the narrowing of the pedestrian path at Rocher Road until full road reinstatement works, which will only take place after the completion of Downtown line.

In both announcements, LTA emphasised the importance of safe driving.

Unfortunately LTA only acts when there is a life lost.

This is not the first time LTA had been reactive. I heard an RC grassroots leader before mentioned that LTA only put up a traffic light controlled crossing after a kid's death at a housing estate.

Perhaps LTA should be broken up into smaller units with clearer KPI and goals, as a huge organization usually moves very slowly.

How much will it cost to the taxpayer?

To prevent side or headon collisions at all major intersections, the green lights should be synchronized only in the daytime to avoid congestion.

With lower traffic flow at night and early morning hours and minimise speeding, the lights should not be synced, increase lost time period-- drivers' response time is slower due to exhaustion, alcohol etc.

another accident prone area is the Scotts Road/Orchard Road junction traveling from Tanglin.
This is a very wide junction located in a junction there is full of distraction. Including festive season lighting, LED screen etc, but there are no overhead traffic light indicator.

I am sure if TP would to look into their accident report record, they will know that accidents like this are very common in this junction. Personally I have already witness 3 such accident on this road and once I almost missed the red lights too. Below is similar accident capture by one lucky motorist.

Perhaps LTA should consider installing a overhang traffic light indicator before anyone get seriously injured or killed.
